New Farmer Training Program - Term 1

Welcome to Term 1 of the New Farmer Training Program!


Term 1 establishes a foundation of knowledge and language for basic farm work. Includes 6 Workshops and 2 Field Days (1 day, 2 locations). Does not include meals on education days - please bring a lunch.


Unless otherwise specified, all sessions take place in Room 236 at the Orchard Park Office Centre, on the Ignatius Farm property in Guelph.


From the list below, you can select individual workshops or field days, or you can opt to sign up for the full term. If you are an EFAO member, make sure you've signed into your account before registering so you can access the member discount.

Language of Local Organic Food Systems
April 22, 9am-12pm What is Organic Agriculture? What does Regenerative mean? Join us for this discussion exploring the language of ecological agriculture & find your fit.
Introduction to Organic Growing
April 22, 1:30-4:30pm This workshop will give you an overview of growing vegetables organically from getting to know your site, common tools, site preparation, & planting to harvest. Dress according to weather.
Botany for Farmers & Gardeners
April 23, 9am-12pm A basic primer for gardeners, farmers, and foodies. Examples of the most common vegetables will be discussed with common pests/diseases & weeds. Pollination, seeds, and seedlings will also be covered.
Building a Healthy & Safe Farm Environment
April 23, 1:30-4:30pm An overview of general food safety concepts & how they relate to vegetable production. We'll discuss anti-oppression frameworks for creating a safe & welcoming workplace.
Soil Health
April 29, 9am-12pm Soil is the foundation of growing healthy food. Learn the properties of soils and how to maintain and build soil health. We will discuss the types of soils and their attributes, & practices to keep soils healthy.
Traditional Land Use & KAIROS Blanket Exercise
April 29, 1:30-4:30pm A unique participatory ongoing history lesson developed in collaboration with Indigenous Elders, knowledge keepers and educators. Discuss shared history, treaty lands, & how to find out where your farm fits in. Free
Field day: Ontario Food Terminal Board
April 30, 8:30am-11:30am Ontario Food Terminal, 165 The Queensway, Etobicoke. See where most grocers get their vegetables. Afterward, meet up at High Park to talk about food security, the role the OFTB plays, and how it affects small farmers.
Field day: Microgreens & Seedling Production at Fresh City Farms
April 30, 1-4pm Fresh City Farms, Downsview Park; 70 Canuck Ave, North York. Join us for a tour of the Fresh City Farms greenhouse at Downsview Park. They grow organically on two acres and in a greenhouse.
